Meet the Maker: Fiona Cranston of Cranston Pickles

Over the Foodies Festival summer season we were joined by hundreds of artisan food producers whose local food knowledge and business stories blew us away. From luxury cheeses to handcrafted gin, our 40,000 strong Foodies Festival goers were treated to the sensory pleasures of some of the UK’s best loved foods.

Following an amazing summer series we asked you for your feedback in our big summer survey, and the resounding answer was that you’d like to see and find out about more local artisan producers. You asked and we listened, and our foodie tastebuds are tingling as we launch our ‘Meet the Maker’ series. Showcasing the very best of Foodies Festival local producers we’re delighted to launch the series with one of our Oxford makers; the joyful Fiona Cranston of Cranston Pickles.

From Christmas family traditions to an artisan food production

Starting a female founded food can be daunting but Fiona has taken her business from strength to strength. An Oxford born girl and avid pickle lover & maker, her love of pickles came from her grandparents Rowland and Sylvia. Every Christmas (and Christmas alone even due to popular demand), a jar of pickled eggs would grace the table. Fiona pickles all manner of fruits, vegetables and free-range eggs, as well as doing pop-up street food (from her pickle van).

All the produce is sourced locally from farms, markets and gardens around Oxfordshire, pickling what is in season and available locally. There is a no single-use plastic policy across the business and all packaging necessary is biodegradable, reusable or recyclable. Her sustainable approach to production means that her pickled goodies are kind to the environment and to your tastebuds. From the custom printed van, featuring her colourful brand by illustrator Anya aka Merm Perm, to the vibrant pickled delights that abundantly tumble out of each Cranston Pickles jar.

From Foodies Festival vendor to nationwide pickle domination?

Hands up if you were at Foodies Festival in Oxford, and got the chance to try some of Fiona’s seasonal goodies. If so, you’ll likely agree with us that her wonderful creations are set for culinary stardom. So, what’s next in the pipeline for Cranston Pickles? She’s currently working away on her seasonal festive recipes while creating expansion plans that will see her scale her production and bring in more pickle varieties to the mix. This will hopefully see her pickles in more independent stockists, used in great chef recipes and restaurants, upscale her fulfilment capacity, and generally become queen of the pickle world.
